The term ice village may seem a little odd and indeed it does not evoke thoughts and feelings of a homely type of place but igloos
of course have been the homes of many people in some of the far northern
regions of the world and for a very long time. These ice made homes when grouped together and being
built solely out of ice of course therefore make ice villages.
The largest ice
village known to have been constructed was built in December 2002,
close to the famous ice hotel at Jukkasjarvi in Sweden. The ice village
comprised of 140 igloo style buildings each made from ice and measuring
14ft (4.3m) x 7ft (2.1m). Each consisted of approx 50 m3 of ice making
a total of approx 7,000 m3 of ice that provided accommodation for
700 people.
There are even "igloo village" holiday packages available! There are travel companies who advertise holidays where you are accommodated in an igloo village (though we believe you stay in log cabins as oppposed to igloos built out of ice) and from there can enjoy all kinds of ice and snow related fun activites - such as snowmobile expeditions and reindeer sledge safaris!
