Some
particles are rarely found in nature - high energy neutrinos are an example
- and these can be used to study different phenomenon in space including
places outside the reach of telescopes. These particles come from the
earth's atmosphere having been generated by cosmic rays or produced in
stars that exploded but because they are so small and don't interact with
other particles, they're rarely found on earth.
The Antarctic ice has been investigated to see if it contains high energy
neutrinos and in 2001 scientists came up with a definitive 'yes'. So more
clues as to the properties and origins of the universe may well be forthcoming
when more research is done. |
