Many of us are concerned about the effects of global warming and the effect of it upon the ice sheets around the world is something few of us understand but indeed sense may be a crucial issue. Many
scientific studies have been conducted on the Antarctic ice but the frozen
Arctic which has its own independent ecosystem has also been under close
scrutiny for change. Indeed, it seems that the sea ice in the north
polar region is getting thinner, having decreased in thickness by about
40% in the last forty years. If this continues, the region's wildlife
will suffer as will the climate for ice sheets reflect sunlight and
therefore stop the earth absorbing too much heat from the sun. Smaller
ice sheets mean less reflection and the natural follow-on is for the
earth to get warmer. A reason for the ice thinning has yet to be found
but scientists are hard at work on yet another pressing climatic question.
