Icebreakers |
|
Two entirely
different meanings apply to this term - icebreakers as used in making conversation and wanting to be sure you say the right thing to the right person at the right time (a very popular search term on the Internet and for obvious reasons!) icebreakers as used in cutting channels through ice packed areas of ocean to ensure safe passage for commercial shipping vessels. |
|
As
this website is dedicated to ice making we'll focus on the latter of
the two definitions. The world record for the largest ever icebreaker
(quoted below) is a measure of just how big a problem frozen ice presents
for humans when it prevails in the oceans around us.
Largest ever icebreaker ~ believed to be the SS Manhattan which had previously been an oil tanker but was converted with protective steel armour back in 1968. The vessel measured 306.9m (1,007 ft) in length and weighed 152,407 tonnes (335 million lbs). (The above statement was correct at the time of inclusion in this website but the record mentioned could be subject to change over time) |
