Ice fishing,
ice skating, ice hockey, ice climbing
- these are all popular sports enjoyed by people all over the world. Some,
like ice fishing and ice skating, have long standing traditions dating
back centuries and indeed they were developed out of necessity rather
than as a sport. Ice fishing amongst Eskimos was essential for food and
travelling across ice and snow at speed was important for hunting or escaping
one's enemies. It's interesting to read that the oldest pair of ice skates
dates back to around 3000 BC.
Ice hockey as it's played today was first played in 1875 but its origins
are believed to be in field hockey as played in Great Britain and France
about 500 years ago. The first artificial ice rink was built in London
in 1876. Ice rinks today are much more sophisticated of course - there
are even portable ice rinks available.

and the longest ice hockey marathon.
Many people enjoy ice skating on an artificial rink but there are still
some who prefer the outdoor, natural ice skating when lakes and rivers
freeze over. There are however serious dangers
in outdoor ice skating.
Ice climbing is perhaps the most dangerous
of any of the ice related sports. It's enjoyed in many countries and there
is a growing amount of information on the Internet for those interested. |
