Largest piece of ice to fall from the sky
Reported in 1849 in Scotland, a piece of ice was found 6m (20ft) long. Amongst the theories for how it came to be that size is that it was a group of hailstones fused together by lightning in a storm.

Longest ice core
Drilled in 1998 from the ice above Lake Vostok in Antarctica, the core is 3,623m (11,886 ft) long.

Largest iceberg
Sighted in 1956 west of Scott Island, Antarctica. Reported to be 97 km (60 miles) wide x 335 km (208 miles) long and more than 31,000 km2 (12,000 square miles) in area which is larger than the whole of Belgium!


Smallest piece of ice
6 water molecules in size (smallest theoretically possible);
Shape: Hexagon; Created at the University of North Carolina, USA, 1999


Largest ice sculpture
Ice palace comprising 18,000 blocks of ice, built in 1992 in the USA by TMK Construction Specialities Inc.
Height: 50.8m (166 ft 8 in)
