How To Handle Ice

ice cubesIce is a curious thing - we all think: "ice ... frozen water" ... simple. Yet there are many different ways in which we come into contact with ice. Ice is very versatile and handling it can be difficult. For example, we can do all the following with ice:
shape it - into cubes using trays of water in a freezer or into nuggets using a portable ice maker
crush it - with an ice crusher (manual or electric)
sculpt it - using moulds (often used for large decorative ice sculptures at wedding receptions, corporate dinners)
shave it - using an ice shaver
break it up - using an ice pick or chipper

So, how do you handle ice cubes? With ice tongs.
How do you handle crushed ice? With a scoop or bucket (such as for chilling champagne).
How do you handle shaved ice? Again, best with a scoop.

Then there are the commercial ice making experts such as the people who resurface ice rinks and indoor snow parks. They use highly sophisticated and expensive machines and how they handle the ice in that context is an entirely different matter! To read more go to the arena ice maker page.
