No,
we're not talking about a manmade ice maker or some other form
of modern technology, but about the earth itself. Most of us carry on our lives
unaware of the massive ice making and ice melting event that takes place in
the Antarctic every single year. Apparently, in a period of just 6 months a staggering 6
million square miles of Antarctic ice is created - only to then melt away in
the following 6 months. It then happens all over again, the cycle repeating
itself.
Understandably, this ice making and melting process has a bearing upon the earth's weather
- a very complicated matter - and the Antarctic itself and is a subject of great interest and research for this very reason.
Ice is clearly an inherent part of the earth's 'life' and without this massive ice making and melting activity the human race would probably not be able to exist on the planet. So next time you get out your ice maker (your home ice machine!) stop for a moment and think about the greatest ice maker of them all - this planet - and how we owe it a debt of gratitude for its ice making capacity. |
